15 Must Eats in Oahu
Kokoro Café
My first must eats in Oahu recommendation is Kokoro Cafe! Familiar with taiyaki (fish-shaped cake) soft serve cones? Well, Kokoro Cafe takes a Hawaiian style twist on taiyaki and transforms these fish-shaped cones into shaka-shaped waffle cones! Choose a filling, a soft serve flavor and 2 toppings. I ordered a coconut and pineapple dole whip swirl with chocolate powder and sprinkles! It was COCONUTTY GOOD! Don’t miss out, and embrace the Aloha when you take a bite of their SHAKA boom soft serve! Find them on the second floor of the Royal Hawaiian Center Food Court!
Address: Royal Hawaiian Center – Pa‘ina Lanai Food Court (Building B, Level 2) 2201 Kalakaua Ave.
Mountain Magic Shave Ice
Shave ice is a popular dessert among locals, and if you want to indulge in some great shave ice, Magic Mountain at the Waikele Shopping Center is the place to go. Their shave ice is soft as a snow and every inch of ice is always soaked in syrup. My recommendation is the rainbow shave ice, which consists of banana, strawberry and vanilla syrup. If you’re feeling a little fancy, you can add toppings like ice cream, mochi or red bean for an additional cost.
Address: Waikele Shopping Center, 94-809 Lumiaina St., Waipahu, HI 96797
Uncle Clay’s House of Pure Aloha
Uncle Clays House of Pure Aloha is another great shave ice shop, and all their ingredients are natural and homemade. What makes this place amazing is their Tahitian Vanilla ice cream. No matter what shave ice flavor your order, the Tahitian Vanilla ice cream pairs well with all the syrup flavors. If I could just order the Tahitian Vanilla ice cream, I would come here all the time!
Address: 1450 Ala Moana Blvd, Honolulu, HI 96814, next to Starbucks Macy’s Ala Moana Center
Paaala Kai Bakery
Planning to be in the North Shore area, stop by Paaala Kai Bakery. Everyone visits Paaala Kai Bakery for its snow puffies! Just by the name alone, you know it will be scrumptious. It is a flaky puff pastry with a creamy custard filling that is topped with powdered sugar and swirly chocolate fudge! These snow puffies run out fast, so make sure you go early to get your hands on them.

Kamehameha Bakery
Kamehameha Bakery is famous for their poi-glazed doughnuts. If you’re wondering what poi is… It is a paste made from the taro root. The doughnut’s glaze is sweet enough to satisfy a sweet tooth craving, and the doughnut is super soft, fluffy and airy. You can spot these babies real fast because they are purple! Buy a dozen poi doughnuts because you will regret buying only one!

Leonard’s Malasadas
Leonard’s Malasadas is known as the home of malasadas and famous for making the malasada popular in Hawaii. Malasadas are Portuguese donuts sprinkled with sugar. Their main store is located in Honolulu, but they also have a mobile truck located in Waikele Shopping Center. Imagine biting into a golden brown dough that is soft and fluffy!!! My favorite is the regular malasada coated with sugar. Leonard’s also serves malasadas with fillings, which include custard, coconut (Haupia) and chocolate.

Modo Hawai’i
Modo Hawai’i is located in the Mitsuwa Marketplace on the second floor of the International Marketplace, Waikiki. Mochi donuts are hard to find in the U.S, but are widespread in Hawaii. Mochi donuts are a bit chewier than regular donuts, but are still delicious! They are shaped in a bead bracelet design. I like to pinch off each “bead” piece and eat them separately. My flavor recommendations are the lilikoi, chocolate, black sesame, and Hawaiian honey glaze. Modo Hawai’i also has a pop up shop in San Jose, CA and plans to open another location in Torrance, CA!

I love the sweetness of the mochi rice flour dough in combination with their spectacular ice cream! Of course my favorite is the green tea. Try their strawberry and chocolate flavors too! Actually most of their ice cream flavors are awesome! You can also find Bubbies ice cream at Whole Foods Queen Street and Foodland Farms Ala Moana.

Try their signature ubae cheesecake! Ube is a purple yam from the Philippines, and is used in many Filipino desserts. Over the years, ube has garnered popularity in the U.S, resulting in so many ube flavored desserts! Their cheesecakes are sold in a 4 ounce cup! The ube cheescake is delicate and soft, and the crispiness of the crust is AMAZING! Their ube cheesecake tarts are great too! So get with the trend and eat some ube! Ubae is located in the same shopping center as Kamehamhea Bakery. After you stop by Kamehameha Bakery, you should swing by Ubae too!

You mix all the ingredients together and chow down! There are many locations on Oahu so check out the location nearest you.

Somi Somi
Somi Somi sells adorable soft-serve taiyaki fish cones! The first time I tried Somi Somi, I ordered the ube-oreo swirl, and it was so wonderful! So I highly recommend the oreo flavor or any combination of the oreo or ube flavor! And I prefer the fish cone without the filling! But if you do want a filling, the filling options are red bean, nutella, custard and taro. I’m excited to try other flavors from Somi Somi and I want to try the matcha next! Don’t forget to take a photo op because the taiyaki cones are just too cute not to photograph.
Ted’s Bakery
Ted’s Bakery makes such awesome pies! Their all-time classic is the chocolate haupia pie. If you’re wondering what haupia is… it is a gelatin coconut dessert. The combination of the coconut and the chocolate is a match made in heaven! Don’t get me started on the pie crust!! It is a buttery macadamia nut shortbread crust! Definitely a winner for pie lovers! You can find Ted’s Bakery pies at Foodland supermarket if you don’t want to drive all the way to North Shore.
