Moo Daeng (Char Siu) Recipe
My mom exudes her love through food. I watched her in the kitchen and took note of her recipes. Because of her, I learned this moo daeng (char siu) recipe. So, I am very glad to share this recipe on my blog. I’m just amazed by how she comes up with these mouthwatering and yummy recipes.
What is Moo Daeng?
Moo daeng is Chinese roasted barbecue pork. Traditionally, char siu was skewered with a fork and cooked over a fire or oven. Char siu is a common dish at Chinese restaurants. It is served in buns, noodles, fried rice or eaten with white rice.
I love the smell of moo deang. When I cook it at home, I think of the fond memories as a child eating char siu baos for yumcha or when my parents brought them home for breakfast or afternoon snacks. Also, I remember the days of waiting in line with my parents and hearing the clamoring of voices in Chinatown as we wait to order our baos for takeout at a Chinese Dim Sum Restaurant.
The aroma of moo daeng and its sauces create a sweet and roasted fragrance. While you bite into the meat, you feel the soft and tender morsels tantalizing your senses. Honey, the secret ingredient, creates the shiny glaze surface on the meat.
Directions
Use pork belly/pork shoulder for this recipe. Pork shoulder contains a good amount of fat for a nice and tender moo daeng. To start, add in the fermented red bean curd, oyster sauce, thin soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey and char siu powder. Next, mix everything well and marinate the pork overnight. The fermented red bean curd and charsiu seasoning create a nice deep red color to the meat.
When you’re ready to cook the meat, remove the marinated pork from the fridge and place it on a baking pan. Bake the pork at 250 F Degrees for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Halfway through the cooking time, drizzle 1/2 teaspoon over the pork. The honey creates a shiny and glazed surface to the meat.
As simple as that! Enjoy this moo daeng recipe! Add your moo daeng to folded buns, noodles or rice!
