Hawaiian Coconut Pudding Recipe (Hawaiian Haupia)
Hawaiian Coconut Pudding (Haupia) is a Hawaiian dessert almost similar to a gelatin. Think of it like a milky and cloudy jello dessert with a coconut taste! Haupia is most commonly served in luaus and gatherings in Hawaii.
I remember the first time I ate my first bite of Hawaiian Coconut Pudding (haupia); I was eating Hawaiian Food at the Waiahole Poi Factory on the east side of Oahu, and I loved every bite of the Hawaiian Coconut Pudding. It reminded me of the Thai coconut agar jelly desserts I use to eat as a kid. Not to mention I have a strong affinity for coconut flavored anything so of course I enjoyed my first time eating haupia. I mean who doesn’t like coconut flavored desserts unless you are allergic to them, which is unfortunate. Anywho, writing about haupia evokes other memories of eating chocolate haupia cream pie and McDonald’s fried haupia pie.
Haupia is very simple to make. Don’t waste your money on overpriced haupia mix because making it from scratch is cheaper and more satisfying. DIRECTIONS
Who knew haupia would be easy to make? It only requires requires 4 ingredients: water, sugar, cornstarch and coconut milk. For this haupia recipe, I used Coconut Milkand Clabber Girl Non GMO Corn Starch.
Once all the ingredients are prepared, pour the coconut milk into a pot.
Add the sugar to the coconut milk.
Place the pot on a stove, and stir the coconut milk and sugar together. Bring the coconut milk to a boil.
As you wait for the coconut milk to boil, stir the cornstarch into the water. Mix it well to get rid of any clumps and make sure the cornstarch does not settle at the bottom of the bowl.
Once the coconut milk has come to a boil, lower the heat and slowly add the cornstarch to the coconut milk. The cornstarch will thicken the coconut milk into a pudding.
Stir until the mixture has thickened.
Once you are finished mixing, immediately pour the coconut pudding in a 8″ x 8 ” pan and refrigerate. Once the pudding has cooled in the refrigerator, it will be ready to eat!

Mahalo for the recipe! My husband’s family is from Hawaii and we love this simple, delicious dessert.
Thank you so much for trying this recipe, and I’m so glad you enjoy it! Have a wonderful day!
Hi! This recipe is very similar to the traditional “Tembleque” from Puerto Rico. But we add to the mix vanilla and cinnamon and also a teaspoon of salt, since the salt enhances the coconut flavor. Tembleque is a christmas season traditional dessert. Its great to learn that other cultures share similarities with ours. Thanks for sharing!
Can you use canned coconut milk??
In the Philippines we add sweet kernel corn and it’s called Maja Blanca
So yummy and soooo easy!!!
I only have stevia in the raw, can I still use that?
Yes. Use this ratio: 1 teaspoon of sugar equals ⅛ teaspoon of stevia powder.
I tried it and love the flavor, but mine was not stiff enough to cut into squares. Can I add more cornstarch?
6 tablespoons of cornstarch should be enough. Did you make sure to refrigerate the pudding after cooking in the pot?
