A Day in the Foodie Life of an Archaeologist

As an archaeologist, I make sure to bring enough food and fluids for work since the days are hot in Hawaii.  Those who  work in a related or similar field to archaeology will agree. The sun drains you and you need food and water to help you keep going. Today’s blog will be dedicated to the foods that I eat during my day at work! Sorry I can’t talk too much about what I find!

strawberries and oatmeal 300x240 - A Day in the Foodie Life of an ArchaeologistI wake up every morning, and I have a bowl of oatmeal. I eat a 1/4 cup of oatmeal each day. Depending on my mood, I will put raisins, strawberries, or cinnamon in my oatmeal. For the field, I prepare a 1/2 gallon of water. I’ve had coworkers who didn’t drink enough water and ended up with heat stress or heat exhaustion.

My favorite Gatorade flavors are white cherry, glacier freeze, and lemon lime. On my non-workout days, I bring an extra 1 liter bottle of water. It’s always a good idea to bring plenty of fluids with you instead of not having enough. On some construction sites, there is water provided and you don’t need to bring extra water, but I don’t always count on it and make sure to bring my own water.

kirkland apple sauce 246x300 - A Day in the Foodie Life of an ArchaeologistI pack snacks to eat throughout the work day. I eat every two hours: 6 am, 8 am, 10 am, 12 pm and 2 pm. My 8 am snack is apple sauce that comes in a to-go pouch. I like to buy natural apple sauce without the added sugar. I like the convenience of slurping the applesauce. I purchase either the Mott’s applesauce or Kirkland applesauce. Just a side note when buying these to go pouches; before you eat them, make sure there are no holes or leakages in the pouch. If there is, throw it out because there might be mold inside due to oxygen exposure from the puncture.

orange 300x200 - A Day in the Foodie Life of an ArchaeologistAt 10 am, I eat another fruit snack, I bring oranges. If not oranges, then I might bring bananas. I get my oranges from Target and my bananas from either Walmart or Target.

salad 262x300 - A Day in the Foodie Life of an ArchaeologistAt 12pm, I usually eat sandwich wraps or salads. My sandwich wrap contains lettuce, mustard, tomatoes and a protein. I switch between chicken, tuna or salmon. For my salads, I cut up lettuce, add cherry tomatoes, corn or boiled eggs. On some days, I will add salmon or chicken into my salad.

At 2 pm, I snack on nuts. I like almonds or regular cashew nuts. Nuts are great because they fuel my muscles during my exercise. Nuts are a great source of carbohydrates, especially almonds. I make sure I get the carbs I need so I can have a great workout!

These foods help me going and prevent me from being drained by the sun. Do any of you work in the field or have a similar job? I want to hear the kinds of thing you eat when you are outside in the field. Or please share what you snack on during work? I want to know what foods keep you functioning during your work day.
